42’ x 72” Walnut,Poplar, Acrylic
Beach lime communicated via still life.
'Liming' is a term used in Antigua and Barbuda and many other eastern Caribbean islands and means chilling, relaxing, getting together with friends and family, and sharing food and drink.
I drew inspiration from my recent trip to Antigua where liming on the beach with friends and family is a simple but meaningful act. The piece shows English harbour rum, coconut water and Antigua black pineapple which I love to share and enjoy while visiting the island where my mother was born. The most important things shared while liming are family stories. Antigua sun above, sand and water at our feet.
30” x 60” Brick, Walnut, Concrete board, Spray paint, Acrylic
100 year old brick made from Toronto clay was cut and layered into this piece.
This brick represents the buildings and homes we see here in Toronto, but most importantly it represents the land that makes up Toronto, a place different from the rest of Canada for its cultural diversity. The v shape and sun are borrowed from the Antigua and Barbuda flag 🇦🇬and represents the brightest and richness that has been added to this city from the people of Antigua and Barbuda as well as the rest of the Caribbean.
The Antigua black pineapple which is the national fruit of Antigua and Barbuda is cut open here showering off its bright beautiful yellow colour as it makes its impression on the brick.
English Harbour
With the support of an Ontario Arts Council grant, I have constructing a large wooden bowl. The piece will be a statement to the deep cultural significance of bowls and seeds to people all over the world and throughout history.
I have constructing the bowl by replicating the spirals created by the seeds in sunflower heads, using each spiral as a structural component. This entails a study of the amazing mathematics of sunflowers, which follows the Fibonacci sequence, the golden ratio and the golden angle.
